Introductory Story
The sun rose up behind the mountain range to the east, its golden light spilling over the peaks to touch the mountains to the west. As it rose higher the great plains of Mulgore bathed in its warmth awakening Tauren and beast alike as a new day began. At least most Tauren were awake with the sunrise.
Maelgywn snored loudly in his sleep as he lay on his back, his legs splayed out at all angles and his tongue lolling from the corner of his mouth. Deep in his slumber he didn't notice the approach of a wizened old Tauren until a staff cracked against his thick skull causing him to roar in shock more than pain. Rolling onto his belly in an ungainly fashion he rubbed at the already rising and somewhat tender bruise on his head with one of his mighty paws. A second whack caught him on the rump before he staggered to his feet and backed away from the angry old Tauren with the staff.
'You are still here!?' the old Tauren bellowed in exasperation, his face contorted in rage. 'Its been four weeks since you passed the right of passage and learned to take on the form of the mighty Bear Spirit!'
Maelgywn started at the old mans feet and attempted to look as remorseful as a bear with paws that could fell a Kodo with a single swipe could. Nervously he started to dig a small hole in the ground with one of his claws.
'Well? What do you have to say for yourself?' The old Tauren demanded and with an after thought addded 'And stand as a Tauren when you speak to your Elders!'
Quickly and without as much drama as some might expect Maelgywn changed form into a Tauren and found himself stood infront of the old Tauren, towering over him infact. Maelgywn like most his race was large and powefully built. His fur was matt black with patches of grey and two mottled horns extended outwards from either side of this head. Three braids bound by leather thongs hung from his head and a golden ring looped through his nose. Altogether he made for an imposing sight.
'Sorry Master' He murmured to the old Tauren. 'I was planning on leaving yesterday but I had to help my Grandmother with her chores.
The old man rolled his eyes at Maelgywn. 'Help your Grandmother! You're a grown Tauren now. Ready to be travelling the world serving the Cenarion Circle like your father did but instead you're helping your Grandmother with chores that she's perfectly capable of carrying out on her own!'
'Yes Master' Maelgywn replied meekly
'What are we going to do with you' The old Tauren asked himself. With a mighty sigh he seemed to come a decision. 'There is a tribe that sometimes travels this way. They call themselves the Mistrunner Tride and word is they are accepting young Tauren into their ranks. They'll be at the border between Mulgore and The Barrens this Sunday and I expect you to be there!'
'Yes master' replied Maelgywn
'You're to make a good impression and just hope that they are willing to take you in because if they don't I don't know will' He commanded Maelgywn.
At that moment Maelgywn looked so downtrodden and miserable that the old Tauren took pity on him.
'You've got potential to be a great druid boy. I just don't want to see you go to waste. Now get your belongings packed and I'll have a word with your Grandmother to make sure she doesn't interfere'
Looking somewhat happier Maelgywn looked up and met the old Taurens eyes.
'Thank you Master'
Character History
Maelgywn was one of the first children born to the newly settled Tauren and as such was unscared by the traima endured by those before the fateful meeting with the young Warchief Thrall as they Centaur attacked them daily, almost killing them all. The only blemish on his life so far had been the loss of his mother to a centaur raiding party when he was a babe and too young to remember her.
As his father had commitments to the Cenarion Circle which kept him away from Mulgore Maelgywn wasraised by his fathers trusted friend and druid trainer Muarin Stormhoof. Despite his best efforts the absence of Maelgywns father during his youth had meant the boy had no role model to copy and thus he became idle. Through sheer bloody mindedness Muarin managed to train the boy in the basics of Druidism and push him into passing his right of passage and learning to master the Bear form.
Now that Maelgywm is finally being pushed out into the big wide world he will no longer be able to rely on others to drive him towards his goals and instead must stand on his own two hoofs. Whether he will succeed or fail is entirely up to him though a little help from friends will surely ease the way.
While he never really got to know his father a message from him reached Maelgywn informing him that his father had been sent through the Dark Portal to assist the Cenarion Expendition in the workings in the Outland. Mael hopes that he will eventually stand before his father as a proud Tauren and an accomplished Druid.
